Feng Shui Directions vs. Qi Men: Which Method Do You Need?
A direction for your desk, a sector of your home and a direction for a journey answer different questions. Start with what you want to do, then choose the method that fits.
What does “Feng Shui direction” mean?
If you are looking for your lucky direction, first identify the question. In Feng Shui, direction can refer to a building’s facing, the sector occupied by a room, or your personal facing direction. Those are different measurements, even when they use the same compass labels.
- Facing: which way a person or building faces.
- Sector: where something sits within a space, such as a bedroom in the southeast part of a home.
- Travel direction: where a destination lies relative to your starting point.
A southeast-facing desk is not necessarily in the southeast sector of your home. Neither measurement, on its own, tells you when to leave for a destination southeast of your office.
How Kua numbers fit into lucky directions
The personal Kua, or Life Gua, method belongs to Eight Mansions Feng Shui. It associates a person with a set of favorable and unfavorable compass directions. A Kua number calculator such as WOFS’s uses birth details and returns those personal directions.
Within that method, your personal direction list does not rotate every two hours. It also does not replace a complete assessment of a home. The room’s location, its layout and the wider environment are separate considerations.
Before following a direction: check whether the advice concerns where to face, where to place something, or where to travel. A direction without its reference point is easy to misapply.
Feng Shui directions vs. Qi Men Dun Jia directions
Qi Men Dun Jia is another Chinese metaphysical tradition, also written Qimen Dunjia or QMDJ. For departure planning, it uses a chart for a selected time to interpret the conditions associated with a direction. This is a different calculation from looking up your Kua directions.

It would be misleading to call all Feng Shui “static”: some schools also examine time cycles. The practical distinction here is between a personal or building assessment and a Qi Men chart for a particular departure.
When you are looking for the best direction for travel
For a journey, start with the origin, destination and times you can realistically leave.
